Overview

Clare specializes in a variety of products ranging from home security panel, cameras, thermostats, video doorbells and many more. The company was looking to expand the range of camera products for their customers with an improved user experience on the mobile application.

The Challenge

Our team was challenged to improve the experience of a white label camera app developed overseas. My goal was to elevate the user experience and reduce customer support calls through my expertise in research and design.
I had to ensure all of the tools and features the devices were compatible with would be implemented in the app during this redesign.

My Role

My role on this project started as the Lead UX Designer conducting user research and creating all user flows leading to high fidelity UI designs. As the project progressed I assumed the role of Project Manager by creating a roadmap for releasing all of the added features over multiple phases.

We were able to determine the priority of features needed and the order in which to release them thanks to thorough research of customer support calls. The final design solution was a result of strong consistent communication with both the stakeholders and the customers of the app.

Research & Design

We determined what features our users were missing through extensive competitive analysis research on some of the industry's best camera apps. Through downloading and interacting with our competitors' camera devices and apps we were able to determine the most important features to users.
The UI design was also crucial to exceeding our customers expectations during this new release of features. During this phase, I not only focused on elevating the user's experience with added features but also on elevating the user interface by incorporating a strong sense of branding with our colors.

User Flows & Developer Handoff

All UX steps are equally important but this step is one of the most significant. It was crucial to our team to always involve not only stakeholders but the developers implementing the designs. The developers were involved from the initial phases of creating iterations for screens in Figma. Creating conversations around the mockups helped ensure there would not be questions or confusion during the final handoff phase. I ensured during all phases that there would be proper user flows interconnecting the flow of features together to help everyone on the team understand the user journey.

Design Iterations & Process

Insights

Challenges we faced on our team include limited resources and time as well as international communication with our overseas development team. Features such as cropping the video within the app had to be removed before implementation due to technical issues with loading the file on a user's mobile app.I learned that clear communication is the most important thing when conveying new features to an overseas team. Many hours were spent creating slide decks, communicating via email and via Figma comments to ensure developers understood the expectations of the project.

Users vs The Business

By integrating new features into the app we were able to exceed customer expectations allowing them to purchase additional devices for their businesses and homes.

Adding new features also allowed us as a company to upsell our product with confidence, creating more sales and success for the company as a whole.

The Final Outcome

The new features delivered an experience exceeding our competitors due to their range and compatibility with a variety of devices that our company integrates with.
